Due to its high concentrarion of endemic and threatened species, the state of Rio de Janeiro stands out as one of the Atlantic forest regions that deserve high priority in terms of conservation. Among the more than 750 species that occur in this state, about 30% are endemic to the Atlantic forest biome.

The book contains Edson Endrigo's photographs, taken over ten years in Rio de Janeiro State. A large proportion of the 175 species depicted are endemic to the Atlantic forest biome and a number of these are in danger of extinction. The text is authored by the biologist Guilherme Alves Serpa, an authority on the wildlife of the State.
