After suffering the infidelities of his wife, King Schahriar decides that every day he will marry a young virgin, who is to be executed the following morning to avoid any further betrayal. To prevent all of the girls of the kingdom from being killed, young Scherezade volunteers to marry the monarch and uses her cunning to make a deal with him by which she cannot be executed until she has finished telling him a story. Her tales will go on for a thousand and one nights, and will end up captivating the king and dissuading him from his cruel enterprise. A Thousand and One Nights is one of the most important and influential works of universal literature. It is a compilation of tales and legends from Hindu, Arabic, and Persian origin, of which there is no definitive text, but multiple versions. The first European translation was made by Antoine Galland into French, in 1704, although possibly the most well-known version is that by Richard Burton into English, published between 1885 and 1888. This selection includes the stories of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, and Sinbad the Sailor.
