This volume is the culmination of the monumental task of treating with text and illustrations in a single work every living bird species in the world.
The volume begins with a Foreword by Anders Pape Møller on birds and climate change, which highlights how a warming planet affects birds in multiple ways, from breeding phenology and migration to population dynamics and the risk of extinction.
With just a few exceptions (6%), the majority of the species in this volume are from the Nearctic and Neotropical. The families, with the greatest number of photographs in the whole encyclopaedia (499), commence with the tanagers (283 species), which include, especially in the genus Tangara, some of the most colourful birds in the world. Then comes the family of the cardinals (42 species), with similarly striking plumage and iconic species like the Northern Cardinal. Next is the extensive family of buntings and New World sparrows (326 species), with representatives in almost the whole world and containing very well-known species such as the White-crowned Sparrow. The book’s final family, completing the taxonomy of birds with its 111 species, is that of the highly social and vocal New World blackbirds.
Volume 16 covers the last four families of the series, including two of the largest of all, the tanagers (283 species) and the buntings and New World sparrows (326 species), as well as the cardinals and the New World blackbirds, the latter including such spectacular birds as the orioles and oropendolas.
