Dangerous Liaisons was first published in 1782, and its great success lead to the appearance of around twenty new editions in a matter of a few months. Choderlos de Laclos created a marvellous and provocative depiction of the licentious and decadent pre-Revolutionary aristocracy through an epistolary novel whose letters reflect the abuses of power and the love intrigues that took place in the salons of the French Court. This magnificent work, inspired by real events that happened in Laclos’s time, has been adapted to film and theatre on numerous occasions. Pierre-Ambroise-François Choderlos de Laclos was born in Amiens in 1741, into a family of the lower nobility. He combined his military and political careers with his literary activity, and became a very popular figure. His most famous work is undoubtedly Dangerous Liaisons, although he also produced a series of poems, short stories, songs, and even a comic opera entitled Ernestine. He was the secretary of Philippe d’Orléans, he formed part of the Jacobin Club during the Revolution, and Napoleon considered him one of his most brilliant officials. He died in Tarento, in September of 1803.
