Guia de les papallones diürnes de Catalunya (Guide to the Diurnal Butterflies of Catalonia) sums up with great rigour and scientific precision the biology, distribution and conservation status of the 200 species of diurnal butterflies known to exist in Catalonia.
The book adopts the most modern and rigorous taxonomical criteria and devotes a section to the morphological description of the adult as well as one which examines the differences between similar species.

The book’s structure is based on individual files for each species. These include:
- Brief description of European, Iberian and Catalan distribution.
- Distribution map for Catalonia, using the UTM grid 10×10 km, differentiating data corresponding to pre- and post-2000.
- Conservation status at regional level following IUCN criteria.
- Biological and morphological description.
- Photographs taken in the wild of immature (egg, caterpillar, chrysalid) and adult states.
The book offers complete and detailed distribution maps for all species, based on published data and, crucially, thousands of unpublished observations obtained through large-scale citizen science projects (Catalan Butterfly Monitoring Scheme, Biodiversidad Virtual, Ornitho.cat), as well as information provided by professional and amateur entomologists. These maps have allowed the evaluation of the conservation status of the species at regional level, applying IUCN criteria.
The text is innovative in that it contains unpublished data on various aspects of the biology and ecology of the species, such as the nutritive plants used, the biological cycle and phenology, habitat preferences, adult behavior, population structure, and threats.

Roger Vila is the Chief Scientist at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (CSIC-UPF). He holds a doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biology from Barcelona’s Universitat Autònoma and was a Fulbright researcher at Harvard under the direction of Professors Naomi E. Pierce and Edward O. Wilson. Since early childhood he has had a passionate interest in butterflies and now directs the of Butterfly Diversity and Evolution Laboratory (http://biologiaevolutiva.org/rvila), where he studies the way in which the diversity of species is generated using the most advanced genetic techniques. He specializes in the systematics and evolution of neotropical and palearctic lepidoptera, and more recently has been investigating African butterflies with the support of National Geographic.
Constantí Stefanescu is a researcher at the Museu de Ciències Naturals de Granollers (Granollers Museum of Natural Science) and associate researcher of the Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals (CREAF: Centre for Ecological Research and Applied Forestry). Since 1994 he has led the Catalan Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (CBMS www.catalanbms.org), a citizen-science network that uses the insects as bioindicators. During his career he has published almost a hundred articles in influential specialist magazines, mostly dealing with the ecology of butterflies.
José Manuel Sesma is a biologist, photographer and author of several books on butterflies. He is founder member and President of Fotografía y Biodiversidad (Photography and Biodiversity www.fotografiaybiodiversidad.org), Coordinator of Biodiversidad Virtual (Virtual Biodiversity www.biodiversidadvirtual.org), Director of Insectarium Virtual (Virtual Insectarium www.biodiversidadvirtual.org/invertebrados) and founding member and President of Objectiu Natura, the Catalan Association of Nature Photographers.
